ANGJ Preview: Discover what’s in store for you!

A Night of Greatjoy promises to be nothing less than a stunning event for lovers of art and Afro-jazz. Art and jazz are both soulful creative outlets that are uniquely special in their own ways. The serenity of art enmeshed in the spontaneous dynamism of a seasoned jazz artist is something anyone with heightened artistic sensibilities looks forward to experiencing. Nduduzo Makhathini perfectly fits the description of the aforementioned jazz artist archetype, and Greatjoy complements it fittingly. Both artists are fond of storytelling through their work and pay particular attention to delivering those stories with depth and authentic real-life references.

While Greatjoy's art encapsulates the interplay of human emotion and outward body movements, Nduduzo's music emanates a spiritual resonance consistent with the sentimental qualities of Greatjoy's canvas. Both creators tend to push the edge of their edge creativity to a level that's almost enigmatic - with Greatjoy dubbed as the "Narrator Of Extremes" while Seton Hawkins of All About Jazz described Makhathini as "a truly singular pianist, an astonishingly gifted composer, and a deeply nuanced thinker on the music...one of the [South Africa]'s most remarkable talents".

The award-winning creator of the jazz masterpiece "Amathambo" will take a break from his international tour, scheduled between June 22 and September 3, to grace the A Night of Greatjoy event on July 18. Accompanying him will be phenomenal musical talents, with performances from the prolific Ndlovukazi - the hitmaker of South Africa's favorite "Gugulethu," neo-soul singer Njabuloseh, and saxophonist Duncan Johnson.

Infinity I, 2023
140 x 290 CM | Charcoal Oil Canvas

July 18 is a date not to be missed, as 28 artworks by Greatjoy will be showcased on the special Mandela Day holiday. The exhibition, titled "Concessions: The Art of Hacking Progress," will include one of his pieces dedicated to Madiba's legacy, titled "Infinity I." This large painting measures 140x290 CM and depicts a surreal scene of a benevolent old woman standing against a luminous backdrop, with dazzling white doves filling the atmosphere. An endless queue of young people extends into the infinite horizons and can be observed receiving her provisions. The old woman symbolizes South Africa, and the luminous climate represents a hopeful spirit and warm attitude toward the masses before her. The piece combines representational and conceptual frameworks to reflect Nelson Mandela's vision of South Africa providing all the necessary provisions for its youth to thrive in the global landscape. The provisions offered by the woman alleviate all forms of deprivation, providing access to education, healthcare, and child welfare. In the words of Madiba, "A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."

Don't miss the opportunity to collect rare investment-worthy pieces and immerse yourself in this remarkable ANGJ experience. Mark your calendars, as the event will be held at the picturesque Rosemary Hill Farm, located east of Pretoria. Tickets are priced at R750, and you can purchase yours by clicking the following link:
