CapeTalk FM: OSSA partners with artist Greatjoy Ndlovu to offer free cleft surgeries

July is Cleft Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness for individuals affected by cleft and craniofacial problems. Cleft palate, which is the third most common birth defect worldwide, affects a child every 3 minutes.

During a CapeTalk radio interview, Dr. Gavin Jones, Regional Medical Officer for Operation Smile South Africa and an anesthetist, joined host Pippa Hudson to shed light on the challenges faced by children with cleft and palate conditions. They also discussed the "Kiss Me Fondly" charity auction, a collaboration with visual artist Greatjoy Ndlovu.

Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) is a global medical service organization that specializes in providing reconstructive surgery to vulnerable children and adults with cleft conditions throughout Southern Africa.

The painting featured in the auction was later acquired by serial American investor and philanthropist, Rich Fettke. It’s quite fitting that Rich was the successful bidder as he is renowned for his charitable endeavors and deep commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of children affected by cleft lip and palate conditions.

We’ll leave you with Rich Fettke's immediate response upon receiving and framing the stunning "Kiss Me Fondly" painting. It still gives us goosebumps:

“Hi Greatjoy! I wanted to show you how we got your artwork framed. We had it mounted on this frame without glass so it shows the raw, true and beauty that you created. Everyone who comes into our house asks about the piece and loves it. I get to share what it means based on the description you included with it and I also get to tell them about Operation Smile. So THANK YOU!”
